This “children” of Tool are not as much appreciated by the band themselves but well… you canté expect everytone to be as risky and original as this guys. Musically, Tool took the first major step towards becoming a true progressive-rock band, as song lengths topped. Tool have been frequently cited as an influence by New Metal bands that emerged after this album, in the late nineties and beginning of the 2000s. Tools previous EP and album plumbed the darkness depths of the human psyche, but Aenima aimed for soulful inspiration and spiritual awakening while still retaining some of the groups characteristically sophomoric sense of humor. Many of the songs make reference to social decay, capitalism, boredom and media as some of the worst experiences in human life. Tool narrates the decadence of nineties Californian culture. Great tracks such as the progressive Eulogy, the recited evolution scale in Forty six & 2 and the brillant title track Ænima are some of the album´s highlights. This is an idea that appears in the whole record: some anti-establishment take. Ænima is flooded with anti hollywood spirit it is a product that stands against the same industry that produced it. ![]() ![]() The first track Stinkfist (censored by MTv as Track #1) says: “I´ll keep digging / Til I feel something”.
